Like the thicket bird
hidden behind spines
tangled in the brambles
branches twined.
Thistle seed airborne,
lofted in flight across the woodlot
autumn rain captures the pappus
settles by broken beams.
Awaits the summer sun
as icicles creep creekside
nestled in blankets
like a seed in cold soil.
For a time in the timber,
deer crouch and wander
crushing greened leaves,
bending fronds backward.
Cotyledons strain skyward,
hang in the suspension of light
while footsteps fall in the forest,
companionship a drift of geosmin.
